The driving standards agency(DSA) set up the driving instructor register to improve the standard of driving instruction and tuition which was bieng delivered. Thier aim was to not only maintain instructor standards but to improve the level of instruction being given to student drivers.

Three tests have been set up in order for you to become a driving instructor. The first will test your knowledge of the rules and regulations and hazard perception. This test is the first step to becoming a driving instructor but another two will follow.

The theory test consists OF 100 questions broke up into 4 sections each section has 25 questions in a certain field you must score 20 out of 25 in each section and also score a total of 85 to pass the theory test.

The hazard perception test is a video clip of a moving car and you must identify potential and developing hazards. Their is 14 clips with one of the clips containing 2 hazards. You will score 0 to 5 points depending on how fast you see the developing hazard 5 for straight away and 0 for very slow or not at all. you must score 59 out of 75 to pass the test.

You must pass both parts of the test to complete step one in becoming a driving instructor. Passing this test will enable you to take part 2 which is a test of you driving ability.

The part two test or advanced driving test will be a test of your own driving ability. you would be expected to drive to a high standard and not commit more than six driving faults. The test will be supervised by a senior examiner in your local district. A trainee instructor badge can be approved if you have successfully completed both the first and second test.

In the part three test which is the most difficult you will be tested on your ability to give instruction. your test will be taken over two parts. The first part the examiner will play the role of a pupil at the beginner stage and the second part he will be partly trained. Depending on which subject he chooses you will have to adjust your instruction accordingly.

In the first test you may attempt it as many times as you need to pass but in the 2nd and 3rd tests you are allowed only 3 attemps to pass. if you are unsuccessful you will have to go back to the start.
